Working with Children whose parents have sexually offended outside the Family
Thursday 22nd April 2010
Course Overview
When a parent commits sexual offences outside of the family, intervention with the offender’s family usually focuses upon risk of sexual harm to birth children. All too often however, the child’s broader needs are overlooked, e.g. their need to make sense of what has happened and to identify and communicate powerful emotions such as shame, anger and fear. The stigma attached to sexual offending by a parent should not be underestimated, and it can result in birth children adopting unhelpful coping mechanisms, such as denial and projection of blame elsewhere. In the absence of age appropriate explanations and support, these children can develop ‘distorted’ thinking about their parent’s behaviour which, if not addressed, can become problematic in later life.
This one-day training event will explore the impact of a parent’s sexual offending upon birth children, their needs, and how best to try and meet them. It will include reference to both male and female offenders who commit contact, or ‘hands on’ offences, as well as Internet offences.

Information about the trainer:
Deborah Jones B.A. (Hons) Dip SW
Deborah began her career as a Probation Officer in Merseyside and worked for ten years with young offenders and their families. She went on to work as a therapist for a National Child Protection charity that focuses upon the prevention of childhood sexual abuse, gaining extensive knowledge and experience in the Family Court arena.
During her career, Deborah has also gained a reputation as a competent trainer in a number of areas. These include dealing with challenging behaviour, staff safety training, and physical interventions with children and young people. Her knowledge and skills in these areas have resulted in her training services being sought by several reputable public and private sector organisations. She has appeared on the Politics Show in relation to physical restraint of children and young people and she has worked as a consultant to the BBC on a programme about personal safety.
Deborah also has considerable experience of working with children and adults who have been sexually abused, as well as sexually abusive young people and adult offenders. This broad range of experience has resulted in a wealth of knowledge about the origins and impact of sexual offending, and led to the development of her work with families in which a parent had committed extra familial sex offences. She has delivered workshops at National Conferences, e.g. NOTA and BASPCAN, on this subject.
